Good news! The Virginia Joint Commission on Health Care has included eating disorder school screenings in their policy options for the upcoming legislative session. They are now inviting public comment to determine whether to pursue eating disorder school screenings. Screenings can be key in early intervention and prevention. This program in Virginia will consist mainly of providing school officials with information about the SCOFF exam, a brief questionnaire to screen students for the possible presence of an eating disorder.

While screening is not a problem in itself, the Virgina program does not appear to give guidance to school officials about what they should do if the SCOFF screening indicates that a student may actually be suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or another eating disorder. This seems to be left up to each school official, and is likely to lead to ad hoc responses that are not well informed by the best available scientific research. I am submitting comments to the Virginia Commission on Health Care, therefore, advocating that parents should be notified immediately if their child answers the SCOFF questionnaire in a way that indicates a possible eating disorder. Parents should also be given evidence-based information about eating disorders, including the report by the American Academy of Pediatrics entitled Identification and Management of Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents

Also, I will recommend that parents be given information about F.E.A.S.T.
