I guess I think this post is about me, bout me, bout me....

OK, so I don't go in for much in the self-promotion vein. It feels icky, and immodest, and tacky.

But on the other hand, I do what I do to encourage others to do it, too, and to speak up for others who have neither the time nor the brain space to do it now.

So, I'm just going to ask once. Or maybe twice. Probably no more than three times: help me out by nominating me as a Health Activist at WEGO Health under the category "Advocating for Another."  It would bring eyes to our cause, and help Google find F.E.A.S.T.  and the eating disorder parent community network (which is, you should know, the main reason for this blog and most of my online activity).

You know you want to. Well, you know I want you to want to!

P.S. Thank you - I've been nominated now, and will post when it is voting time. I really, really appreciate it and feel all embarrassed (but tickled) - Thank you!!

  1. Which one would you like to be nominated for? Makes sense to put all votes in one category.

  3. done and done! you completely deserve it!
I wasn't too sure which award category you best fit into, so I went with my instinct and nominated you for "advocate for another" (I forget the whole title).

    Good luck.

  5. I would be honored to be nominated for the Advocating for Another.

I've nominated someone for the Paperboy, and someone else for the Rookie awards. It would be lovely to have others in the ED world nominated for various awards. We have WONDERFUL social activists in this community!!

  6. Done! Nominated for Health Activist Hero

Here's what I wrote. Hope it's ok! They just let you go on and on, so I did.

Laura Collins Lyster-Mensh's teenaged daughter manifested anorexia, and she and her family found ways to bring her to health and recovery. She wrote a book about their experience called "Eating With Your Anorexic". Laura then started F.E.A.S.T., Families Empowered and Supporting Treatment of Eating Disorders, http://www.feast-ed.org and became it’s Executive Director. "F.E.A.S.T. is an international organization of and for parents and caregivers to help loved ones recover from eating disorders by providing information and mutual support, promoting evidence-based treatment, and advocating for research and education to reduce the suffering associated with eating disorders."

Associated with FEAST is a moderated forum started by Laura for parents and caregivers of those with ED's called Around the Dinner Table (ATDT) where hands-on advice and experiences are shared. Many lives have been saved because of Laura's book, FEAST and ATDT. On a personal note, since my involvement with FEAST and ATDT 2 1/2 years ago, I have learned valuable information and been able to steer my young adult daughter, who suffers from multiple EDs, into effective treatment after many years of entrenched illness and failed treatments. Without the work that Laura has done, I doubt that we would have discovered this information and helped our daughter to embark on this path to recovery.

I recently attended FEAST's first international symposium in Alexandria VA, http://feast-ed.org/Alexandria2011.aspx, where the keynote speaker was Dr. Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health. The symposium was Laura's idea and she was the driving force behind it. Called "The Map Ahead", it was concerned with ways to help find and spread the word about effective treatments, to figure out how parents can have a voice in policy and research, and to spread correct public knowledge of these illnesses. Here's the program that Laura put together; it will give you an idea of what an incredible advocate she is for sufferers and their loved-ones. http://feast-ed.org/Symposium2011Program.aspx. It was a fantastic experience!

Here is the blurb about her from the FEAST site: Laura Collins Lyster-Mensh, M.S. is a writer from Virginia who became an activist for improved eating disorder treatment after the recovery of her teen daughter from anorexia. Her book, "Eating With Your Anorexic" (McGraw Hill), is a memoir of her family's experience. Collins is an affiliate member of the Academy for Eating Disorders, volunteers with the Eating Disorders Coalition, and ANAD. She has been an invited speaker for the National Eating Disorders Association, the Academy for Eating Disorders, Renfrew Foundation, Ophelia's Place, the University of North Carolina Eating Disorders Program, and Eating Disorders Coalition conferences. Collins writes a blog for the Huffington Post, and is also frequently interviewed by the media, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, BBC News, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, NPR, and the Los Angeles Times. Her personal blog appears at LaurasSoapBox.net.

I wholeheartedly nominate Laura Collins as my Health Activist Hero, 2011 for the reasons above, and many more!

  10. OK, now I'm all embarrassed (but grateful!). Now that the nominating is done, I'll look forward to the voting stage later on.

Meanwhile, go nominate some other people for the various awards - I did!
