Henrietta and her cells are laughing!
If I had not just finished reading (and you really should, too - you'll be riveted)
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
I would not have appreciated the back story of the news that Chronic Fatigue 'virus' was actually a lab mistake.
I was one of those who crowed, and now eat crow, about that discovery.

Oh what a shame! I'm sure anyone suffering chronic fatigue is quite disappointed at this revelation. I remember reading about HeLa cells when I was doing my honours degree (what a scandal). I wonder how many more immortal cells are lurking in science labs worldwide??
ReplyDeleteI am riveted. Except for checking your blog just now and washing/folding laundry, I've been parked on the sofa reading the book. It is excellent! (and scary)
ReplyDeleteMy dad has Chronic Fatigue syndrome, and i for one am pretty disheartened by this. We thought there was some hope, we thought that they were finally getting somewhere with understanding his debilitating condition....but now i see that is not the case. This only raises more questions. Im so frustrated.
ReplyDeleteIt is disappointing and tragic - I don't mean to make light of it. This doesn't mean it ISN'T a virus, of course, but it's a harsh blow to the hope that something really had been found.
