There is no replacement for food

New study establishes that fructose and sorbital cause more gastric distress in ED patients than other people. Diet foods, of course, are a great source of both fructose and sorbital.

Eating disorder patients often become manic gum chewers, and you may also remember that chewing gum with sorbital has been associated with gastro problems and severe weight loss.

So many things parents need to know as they try to help loved ones recover!

  1. Very interesting.

I have dealt with a lot of digestive/GI issues, one of the current ones being fructose malabsorption. It's at a point where even fruit is now on my "can not eat" list until my stomach lining repairs itself. As hard as it was for me to stop with 4 or 5 pieces of fruit a day, I've certainly felt better. (And my awesome doctor who really understands these things assures me that fruit will eventually be OK again.) In addition I'm totally off of high fructose corn syrup, sorbitol, and xylitol. Sorbitol is one surefire way to make me one miserable bear.

All this mess with letting the stomach lining heal has been really tough. I'm beyond grateful that I've got a doctor who has the know-how to treat this stuff plus who understands and has helped me to find resources to deal with the psychological ramifications of even the treatment.
