Diet soda and weight gain

I hate that the title of this blog post will get me more hits than most of the very fascinating things I write about... but then again: hello, Internet, nice to see you!

I want my readers to check out a post by my friend, Lori, the author of Drop It and Eat, about diet soda and looking at research critically.

Diet Soda Causes Weight Gain?

  1. Thanks for sharing this, Laura! And for the record, I share your sentiment about the title. But I realize we've got to meet readers where they're at in order to help change their thinking. Thanks for helping me do so.

  2. Kind of reminds me of reports on yo-yo dieting effects - all the weight one loses is likely to come back, and 80+% of the time one ends up weighing more than one did to begin with. My nutritionist called this a fear tactic. Who would trust recovery with this kind of stuff floating around popular media? Not sure if yo-yo dieting is perceived by the body in the same way as are restricting and refeeding, though. In the latter case we see edema and hypermetabolism.

  3. Exactly on the comparison to yo-yo dieting. On whether re-feeding after restricting I think we're talking about far more acute malnourishment than dieting. Dieting is usually just a temporary decrease in calories and the rebound is slow. With re-feeding to regain weight from restriction the deficit is usually large and edema and hypermetabolism are from rapid increase (appropriate, of course).

  4. If there is such a thing as recovery from dieting, I wonder how many people would opt for it with all this info or possibly disinfo about that effect. I don't believe in censorship if it is valid info, though.

  5. Maybe they should emphasize that dieting is unhealthy for OTHER reasons besides, "Oh, you might get FAT!!!"

  6. It took not looking for it to find it. Hope this is accurate.
