Perhaps the best advice I've received this week is this: "don't read it."

I was unaware of just how much venomous, cruel, heartless, personal, creepy, and incoherent ranting exists in comment sections. I don't know these people. I don't just mean personally, I mean I just don't know what kind of people these must be in person. I've never met anyone who was so nasty.

Perhaps that's the point. No one behaves that way in person.

  1. Yes, some people abuse the freedom of the Internet to be just plain nasty. As your good friend said - don't read it!

  2. Laura, I know it's not exactly the same thing but this struck a chord http://xkcd.com/481/ - I have admired your composure under fire.

  3. Seriously, some people have far too much time on their hands. I got similarly hateful comments after being quoted on another piece about the media and eating disorders (my position being that eating disorders are illnesses, not created by supermodels). Most of the commenters skipped right over that and insisted that anyone who doesn't like supermodels must be obese and jealous! Yeeeah, because I always wanted a job where I could be paid to starve myself. No thanks.

Some people will try and stir up an argument whether they are discussing a serious issue or the weather forecast, so good for you for keeping perspective. Not reading the comments is probably the best advice ever, 'feeding the trolls' just makes them worse!
