Anorexic University

Being in the U.S., I am more familiar with our (lack of) mental health system. But I read with interest and empathy of parents in Australia:

  1. I think this story highlights the importance of 24/7 care which is unavailable in a fund starved public health system.
Another interesting article in Pub Med by Thomas Joiner "Why People Die of Suicide" which looks at the risk of anorexic patients. AN patients that "feel they are an intolerable burden on others" as well as "feeling isolated from people who might provide a sense of belonging".
Following on from your previous article is suicide more likely in body dysmorphic AN-R types?

  2. Must go - am supposed to be driving from the West to the East of my country in 10 minutes! but couldn't resist looking at this. As Carolin has said, the story does highlight some of the problems in public health systems. Not being a fluent reader of Swedish, I cannot find this out, but I suspect that the publicly funded system in Sweden is not without its critics and failures either, but having put all their public eggs and finance in the basket of Mandometer it does seem that the Swedes are doing well in serving the majority of their own population and in spreading their ideas while simultaneously recovering some of their investment by selling their service in other countries. Whether this is ultimately moral, or indeed sustainable in an atmosphere of global recession is an interesting question - well it is to me as someone fascinated by health economics.

  3. I find it disappointing to read media criticism and name calling of the major ED service provider in NSW in favour of a private organization that shows statistics that are no better than FBT.
As one clinician pointed out to me, the service Mandometer offer is basically what a parent offers, except you pay to have someone else do the job. Which is OK if you can afford it.
