A Unified Theory of Autism

Once again I look to the parents in the autism world for guidance on how we, in the eating disorders world, can understand and use new discoveries in science:

A Unified Theory of Autism

  1. The political and social movement started by parents of kids with autism should be a real inspiration for those of us whose kids have an ED. It was so hard for those parents to get the movement off the ground because of the relentless parent-blaming they faced by so-called experts such as Bruno Bettelheim, the liar and pseudoscientist who put forth the idea that parents caused autism and who once said "the precipitating factor in infantile autism is the parents' wish that his child should not exist." To find out about the real Bruno Bettelheim, do a google search of his name. The second and third references are to a couple of excellent reviews of Bettelheim biographies, one by Richard Pollack and the other by Nina Sutton. The parents who a couple decades ago knew in their hearts that the "experts" like Bettelheim didn't know what they were talking about launched a movement that resulted in much better care, huge increases in scientific funding, reduction in stigma, and a far better world. Hooray for them!

  2. I was just sent this link to a beautifully made, powerful video on autism. There are some parallel's with our fight here, i.e., the insurance issue. The fellow coworker who passed it on to me was told that the band, Five for Fighting, is donating $0.49 to Autism Speaks for each time the video is viewed.  The funding goes toward research studies to help find a cure for Autism. They are aiming for 10,000 hits.
